The Epic Quest

Thank You

It was fascinating to see all of the deviantART community's different depictions of their personal apocalypses. The imagination and quality of work that we received for the Darksiders: Your Last Days Contest was extremely impressive. So thank you, our dear deviantART community!

We'd also like to give a big "Thank you!" to Joe Madureira from Vigil Games for picking the three winners from the terrific Semi-Finalists. It was a tough job, and we sure are glad he stepped up to the challenge. Thanks, Joe Mad!

So whose visions of their last days really stood out among the rest? Let's check out the winners!

Both images are very good, but the one featuring Death doesn't even portray Death as he is in the franchise.

lol When I saw the game in a shop a week ago I was like 'Huh, this seems so familiar...*broods over it*' then I got it and now while browsing for fanart I found this Contest again, can't believe I almost forgot about it :P
@Everyone complaining: Fanart won, so what? They are all brilliant artists/works so no need to make a fuss.

Wow, what a load of horse hockey. Fan-art won first place?!

The contest challenges people to submit a CREATIVE piece illustrating what they think the end of the world will look like, and frikkin' creatively-devoid fan-art takes first. Donkey balls.

The winning entry is really well done, and clearly took time and skill, but scores a zero on the creative scale...

Well, I think some people aren't getting it. There is a reason why they held this contest.

The first place winners piece will/could be used as a DVD cover or some other forms of promo material for the game.

Now the rules may say one thing. It may come across as demeaning or a lie.

This is done to give the impression that they are not exclusionary (is that word?).Because DA is a community of many different artistic tastes, skills, mediums.

If they just came out and said "this is for a game company. For a dvd cover, posters etc etc. This will discourage others not to participate in the contest leaving most people saying "hey, what about us?, this is a community. DA is just a shill for the man"

Now, that being said. Some people aren't happy about fanart winning. Just ask yourself. What kind of artwork do you see on game covers and posters? It's mostly fan art.

Hence, the first place winner. If I wanted a piece to be on my cover, that's the one I'd want.

The second and third, although awesome pieces don't strike me as cover or poster material. They just don't have that wow factor for a cover or poster. After all, the covers and posters are the first line in selling the game. A boring cover doesn't sell.

As far as the rules are concerned. I can understand why DA would try to include everyone in its wording for the reasons stated above.

However, from time to time I with they would just say "this is a contest for a company that will be using the winning art for promo material. So it better be damn good.

I don't have a problem with DA holding contests on their own and for companies. Why not have both?

Anyway. It was a fun contest. Congrats to the winners.

This is true.

I guess people get confused and mistakenly think deviantART is concerned with creativity and originality -- and not just glitzy marketing material.

Some of their contests are more blatant about it than others, but I have yet to see an official dA contest that doesn't have ulterior motives (which mainly center around the avoidance of paying a graphic designer).

Ah well, what can you do? Personally, I recommend people seek out other sources for contests...

clarification concerning what i find demeaning in the contest rules....

this sort of thing:

-----------------------------
All Works submitted will remain the exclusive property of the entrant, provided each entrant agrees that:

ii. except as expressly required in these Official Rules and in connection with the Work, entrant may not use the Assets in any manner whatsoever without the express prior written approval of the owner of the relevant Asset(s) (i.e., deviantART, THQ or Vigil Games, as the case may be);

v. deviantART, THQ or Vigil Games may otherwise use prize winning Works in such manner and upon such terms and conditions as the relevant entrant may approve in writing (such approval not to be unreasonably withheld, delayed or conditioned)...

vii. deviantART, THQ or Vigil Games or its assigns may commercially exploit the works as provided above without any liability or additional compensation or consideration to entrant of any kind. In the event either of deviantART, THQ or Vigil Games wish to exploit any Contest Work in a manner other than provided above, deviantART, THQ or Vigil Games as appropriate shall request prior written consent (such consent not be unreasonably withheld, delayed or conditioned) from the respective entrant.
-------------------------

in sections v and vii DA/THQ will request permission from entrant, but consent is required! but notice that up above in part ii that DA/THQ does not have like requirement, that "such consent not be unreasonably withheld, delayed or conditioned" the way it does for the entrant in the latter sections.

i see a lack of equanimity in the wording of these contracts. there are tons of regulations about what the entrant must do, can do, can't do, while very little constraint is applied to the corporate end of the equation. it seems to me that the artist is being used and the corporations protected.

well, for my 2 cents worth, when i saw this contest i was stimulated, until...i read the DA contract/rules associated with it. i found them to be obnoxious and demeaning, to put it mildly. DA would do well to stop acting like some mega-corporation and be more humane...and artistic.
